July 2009 Newsletter

It's been ages since our last newsletter – and we're sorry about that. The simple fact is, we've been really busy with lots of interesting projects and, as a pleasant surprise during the demise of our economy, we've been working with a lot of start-up companies. If you'd like to keep more up to date with the Blue Lobster team, you can always follows our exploits on Twitter – or simply call us and say “Oi, what you up to?”.

We've Moved

That's right, we've outgrown our office at the Riverside Business Centre and have now moved to:

Unit 8, Quayside Business Centre, Lowestoft Enterprise Park, School Road, Lowestoft, Suffolk. NR33 9NW.

Those of you who know Lowestoft well will realise we've only moved up the road. We're still decorating a bit but settling in nicely. We still have the use of the facilities at all the NWES buildings (including our old building at Riverside).

Some of our recent Websites

We can't put them all here, but here are a few recent sites:

Changes to the Blue Lobster IT Website

Some of you may have noticed some changes going on with the Blue Lobster IT website. We've recently made significant changes to our website and it's Content Management System (CMS) and over the coming weeks we'll be adding significantly more content to the site. We'll be adding resources for Business Start Ups and considerably more information about the services we provide. We're also working on a DIY Search Engine Optimisation guide, designed to help you carry out SEO by yourself, which may improve rankings and what we're all looking for, quality traffic. So keep checking back and seeing what we're up to. If you're particularly interested in SEO, you can follow along with my blog where I often talk about SEO subjects.

Launch of ILPTools Application for local schools

In conjunction with Ashley School, we have developed an Individual Learning Plan Application (called ILPTools) for students and tutors to keep online records of qualifications, training and progress, learning targets and objectives. Students and Tutors are able to produce PDF files from the Learning Plans and may interact with each other to adapt the plan to fit the learning requirements of the individual. The application will be launching across the area over the coming weeks.

Marine Data Tools

Blue Lobster IT have been working with Cefas and around 30 European Marine institutes to develop a unique set of web-based marine data tools. These tools will enable European scientists to monitor changes in the health of our seas. The tools will bring together data from ships, satellites, and buoys into charts, maps, and Google Earth for the first time...ever! And...anyone can use them!

The tools have attracted global attention and look set to be extended to include even more data from around Europe and perhaps the World.

Blue Lobster IT Supporting The Make Your Mark Campaign

The Make Your Mark Campaign is designed to “Increase entrepreneurial behaviour amongst young people - to encourage them to have ideas and make them happen. Having a can-do attitude and the skills to spot opportunities, overcome challenges and implement ideas is more important than ever in today’s tough global economic climate.”

Blue Lobster IT are proud to be involved with the campaign in the Lowestoft area and we're looking forward to working with and for young people to help them achieve their aspirations.

We recently held a stand at an Innovation and Skills Event at the Orbis Energy Centre, Lowestoft. Representatives from local businesses and schools gave presentations and discussed innovation in the area. It always amazes us just how much is going on around Waveney. We made some good contacts with young entrepreneurs that we'll be following up. Read About Make Your Mark.

Changes to our branding

Some of our branding has been changing. We have new business cards (which I've just realised will have to be re-printed due to the move!) and some of our electronic media has been 'retouched' too. We're pretty good at branding, ideas, logos, business cards, letterheads, and digital.

New Staff

We've recently welcomed two new staff to the team. Their profiles are below:

Jonny Goddard, Senior Web Designer

Originally from an acting and teaching background, it was clear early on in Jonny's career that he had significant flair for creative digital media. Jonny specialises in graphic design, web design, content management systems, e-commerce systems and search engine optimisation (SEO). Jonny is a keen advocate for web design standards and is constantly researching and trying out new technologies to improve the usability of web interfaces.

Oliver Sale, Senior Web Developer / Linux Expert

After finishing his degree in creative multimedia, Oliver started his career working for one of Norwich's leading web agencies. After two years experience, he moved closer to home and began working for Blue Lobster IT. Oliver has significant experience in a variety of development technologies but his key skills are: .NET, Linux, PHP, XHTML, Javascript and Flash development. He is also experienced in using a variety of creative media including image manipulation, sound & video editing and 2D & 3D animation.

Blue Lobster IT Moving Offices

Yes, it's true, we're moving offices. Not far though, only a few hundred meters. Those of you who know us well will know that we've been steadily growing over the last 12 months and had already moved into a larger office in the Riverside Business Centre in Lowestoft. We've now outgrown that space too and are about to take up residence at the Quayside Business Centre where we have a self contained unit around 3 times the size of our existing office - right next to the river and the wonderful 'Go Fish' restaurant.

The past week has seen Simon & Kathryn (as well as family and friends) frantically painting and decorating the office in preparation for the move. All the communications lines have been ordered and installations start next week. As soon as the communications are in, we'll all be moving in too. As the unit we're moving into is owned by the NWES group, we'll still be able to utilise the full facilities at the Riverside Business Centre (as well as other NWES business centres right across Norfolk and Suffolk).

We'll let everyone know when the move's complete, why not make a plan to pop in and enjoy a coffee and a chat with us?

Our new address details and directions will be changed on the website shortly. Can't wait to see where it is? Click Here to see an ariel view - we're right in the middle.

We're recruiting a Web Developer / Linux Administrator

If you think you've got what it takes to work with one of the best agencies in the area, we'd like to hear from you. We're currently recruiting for a Web Developer / Linux Administrator. Why not have a look at the Web Developer / Linux Administrator Job specification and details of how to apply?

Supporting Lowestoft 'A Living History'

What will you be doing on 11th July?

Wallers’ Raid Remembered at Historical Event on 11th July 2009

It is still within living memory when the Germans launched their most devastating attack on Lowestoft. It happened on the 13th January 1942 in the middle of the day when shops were open and people were out and about.

A huge chunk of London Road North was simply demolished by bombs. Walk passed the shops today and you can see where the older Victorian frontages vanish and are replaced by more modern shops, the result of being rebuilt after that terrible day in January.

What made the attack so frightening was that the Germans struck in broad daylight with little warning and the main victims of the raid were young girls and boys, some as young as 14 who were working in the shops at the time of the raid.

The German fighters flew in low over the town, so low people could look out their upstairs windows and see the pilots and the anti-aircraft gun were unable to shoot at them. The Germans flew down London Road North dropping bombs and machine gunning the street and anyone in it.

After the raid large chunks of the town were smoking heaps of stone, the only evidence of shops that once stood there were piles of rubble. Perhaps the biggest site for causalities was the Wallers Restaurant which had been busy with civilian customers and servicemen before the raid. Afterwards it was almost flattened, and many of its customers and staff were dead.

The rescue crews took days to find all the victims, in the meantime families had to wait to hear what had happened to their loved ones.

It is hard to imagine the devastation that one raid caused but on the 11th July, World War II is remembered in Lowestoft with a Historical Pageant. Come to London Road North and you could just meet the Homeguard drilling and preparing for the time Hitler might actually invade Britain. Stand outside Chadds and witness a fashion show from the 1940s, brought to life by children from the Denes High School.

Wander further up and you could stumble across the NAAFI canteen where you can get a corn beef sandwich and cup of tea. And then carry on to meet more people from the past. Witness Oliver Cromwell taking control of the town after a half-hearted defence by the royalists. Watch the Dockside Dandies wander by in their fabulous suits. Meet the fisher girls, once a vital part of the Lowestoft fishing industry and hear them singing while herring is gutted ready to be transported across the country.

Be swept into the darker side of Lowestoft as the Lateral Artistes perform their own version of the Lowestoft Witch Trials and then visit the various music acts bringing alive the past of our historic town. And watch your step, as there will even be a dinosaur roaming around!

Lowestoft ‘A Living History’ will be happening on 11th July 2009, between 10am and 5pm, with acts performing throughout the day and various re-enactors bringing to life Lowestoft’s past. Cefas and Blue Lobster IT working together on North Sea Observatory
Conference holds out hope for North Sea – and funding

Scientists at the Centre for Environment, Fisheries & Aquaculture Science (Cefas) will be hosting an international event in Suffolk to address the need for a North Sea Observatory.

Around 30 international scientists and policy-makers will meet at the Orbis Energy Centre in Lowestoft on 2–3 June 2009 to discuss the new Observatory.

The seas provide jobs, food, energy and recreation. They regulate climate and are a source of beauty and biodiversity. But this richness also brings competing demands among stakeholder groups, and can make decision-making within and between nations complex.

The proposed North Sea Observatory would promote international co-operation and increase the availability of marine data and information. Such information will provide decision-makers and marine users with a more comprehensive and joined-up view of the marine environment, providing them with a deeper understanding of the impacts of human activities and climate change. This, in turn, will enable them to make better-informed decisions about issues like flood risk, coastal erosion, energy generation, ferry and transport links, fishing, tourism, and recreational uses of our seas.

Cefas Senior Scientist, Dr Dave Mills, says: “The marine environment is becoming increasingly important as the number of users increases and the human impacts on the seas grow. Policy-makers really need the very best information upon which to base decisions that affect us all, and the planet. Meetings like this help nations to share their views and pool expertise, so that together we can design systems that will provide the most relevant and easily accessible information.”

The Cefas meeting will also put the agency and its collaborators in a better position to win large EU funding bids. The North Sea Observatory would fall under the umbrella of the European Marine Ecosystem Observatory (EMECO), offering a more regional focus within this over-arching framework. The additional funding streams, needed to established the North Sea Observatory, could help to secure high-tech jobs in Lowestoft and the surrounding area, having a positive economic benefit on local businesses and the region.

The EMECO initiative has led to the establishment of an effective working relationship between Cefas and the Lowestoft firm, Blue Lobster IT.
