EMECO Datatools
An application for integrating and visualising large marine environmental datasets from across the UK and Europe. By drawing in data from a variety of platforms (including fixed point buoys, satellites, gliders and ship mounted platforms etc.), the application produces complex outputs which are used by marine scientists and policy makers responsible for monitoring the state of the oceans.
The application is built using PHP, JAVA and front end technologies such as HTML, CSS & JavaScript with a powerful GIS database (PostgreSQL /PostGIS). The application adheres to International data standards. Near real-time data are updated automatically and are collected from remote servers via scheduled processes.
As well as a public user interface, the application has extensive functionality available to the various types of users including:
- A data import tool that allows users to upload their own data, share it with other users and set up their own user interface
- Extensive data representing all aspects of marine ecosystems from temperature to fish
- An Assessment and reporting tool for meeting policy requirements
Independent Learning Tools
An application developed for schools. The tool allows pupils, teachers, parents and support workers to agree and set targets and track progress interactively.
The application is built using PHP, FLASH/FLEX and JavaScript with a MySQL database. The application has an attractive design and a simple user interface.
Shark By-Watch UK
An application that enables fishermen to record sharks that they tag and return to the sea as well as previously tagged sharks that they catch and return. The application displays the data on an online map that shows the distribution of around 30 species of sharks and rays around the UK.
The application is built using PHP and JavaScript and uses OpenLayers for the GIS mapping implementation. The application will be launched later this year.
Model Import Tool
A tool for accessing large datasets stored in NetCDF format from remote THREDDS servers. The tool enables users to query Marine Ecosystem Model Data from various servers around the world for analysis.
The application is written in Java.
